With names like Jhonen Vasquez and Todd McFarlane attached, these should be great events.

Brief Cases - A New Graphic Novel by Tom Taylor

My short play 'Drip' has opened at Newtown Theatre in Sydney tonight as part of Short and Sweet. It runs until Saturday so, if you're in the area, you should go see it... I would, and I've seen it before.

Also on the 'Drip' front, the comic book adaptation is looking quite likely to be published along with a lot my other writing later this year. I won't say more until I can but here is a preview page illustrated by the fantastic Tom Bonin - who is currently in a small cottage in England.

'Falling Praying' Nominated For Awards And The ABC Interview.

Melbourne Short and Sweet ended on Saturday night at the Arts Centre and 'Falling Praying' did very well. The show picked up nominations for 'Best Comedy Script' and 'Best Production' to add to the 'Judge's Choice' and 'People's Choice' awards it won earlier this year at Crash Test Drama.

Falling Praying was at it's best on the final night and the audience were in hysterics.

A huge thank you and well done to our incredible director Jacqui Shulz, who took this little play well past the script and created something quite amazing.

Thanks also to our brilliant actors; Josh Futcher, who won the 'Best Male Actor' award and immediately called his mum, and Sonya Kerr, who also fared well with the judges.

Josh, Sonya and I had a bit too much fun being interviewed on ABC radio last week and the entire interview, including an excerpt from the play, can be heard here. My voice isn't normally this high... I think I was trying to appear non-threatening. The interviewer was very interested in my past as a professional juggler and fire eater... I forget people find that interesting.

Writing for Dark Horse Comics, Gestalt Publishing and Theatre

For a while now, I have only existed outside of daylight hours.

This is because I have been busily working on a new project for Dark Horse Comics. The project is being illustrated by my good mate Colin Wilson, which gives us even more reason to drink coffee and talk for hours. I can't say too much more at this stage but there will be an official announcement in early 2009.

I am also working on a number of exciting projects with Gestalt Publishing. Gestalt are doing some big things at the moment and working with some wonderful creators, like award-winning artists Shaun Tan and Ben Templesmith and authors James Barclay and Terry Dowling.

Meanwhile, my play 'Falling Praying' will be on at the Melbourne Arts Centre from Wednesday the 17th of December to Saturday the 20th.

This week saw a new project I'm writing get the green light from the publisher. More news as I can speak about it.

My short play 'Falling Praying' has tonight won the People's Choice and Judge's Choice awards at Crash Test Drama. A big thank you to Harry Paternoster, Cath Krejany, Paul Goddard, Charity Shaw and Jane Miller.

This Wednesday my play 'Believe' begins a two week run as part of Dante's Spring Carnivale. All welcome.

Lastly, the recent success of 'The Example' has seen it hit the number 1 spot in "Script Squirrel's Top 40". To read it and some other great plays head here.

'Variety' Reports Colin Wilson's 'Headshot' Has Been Optioned by Warner Brothers.

Colin Wilson is the talented guy who illustrated my stories White Dove III (current release date; March 09) and The Example (also due to be published next year).

Variety and several other sources have today announced that Warner Brothers have acquired the rights to Matz and Colin's Graphic Novel series "Du Plomb Dans la Tête" or "Headshot".
Alessandro Camon of "Thank You for Smoking" fame has been set to write the script. Alexandra Milchan and "Smallville" creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are set to produce.

Unbelievable Colin. Congratulations!

Colin and I are also working on a huge comic book project for a well-known property which I will be announcing (without much detail) very soon.

My new play 'Falling, Praying' has made it into the Top Twenty' of Short and Sweet to be performed at the Melbourne Arts Centre in December.

Meanwhile 'Drip' is currently on at The Carlton Courthouse in Playspotting as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

I should also mention that my mum, Anna Taylor, also has an installation piece in the Fringe Festival at BUS gallery in Lonsdale Street Melbourne titled 'Deception'.

Deception is an installation of a multitude of abstracted forms, created from knitted wire suspended from the ceiling. These laborious and delicate forms make reference to displaced communities, balancing a fragile appearance with the harshness of their construction.

A Great Week - Film, TV, Comic Books And A Surprise Contact From The USA.

Earlier this week I was contacted out of the blue by Jeremy Kagan. Jeremy is the Emmy-award-winning director of Chicago Hope who has also directed a bazillion other TV and film projects including one of my favourites, The West Wing.
Jeremy saw my play 'The Example' at The Edinburgh Festival and appreciated my "insight, language and tension." He asked for a copy of the script to share with his graduate film directing students at USC. He also thought it would make a great short film and asked if I was interested in this... pretty amazing.

A huge thank-you to Nick Brice and everyone at Bite-Size theatre who obviously put on a great production.

Meanwhile, it looks like the TV series I was writing earlier this year is happening and, if all goes as planned, it could start shooting as early as November. Another series I've been working on also looks set to happen - unless it becomes a feature film instead. I'll give more details when I'm allowed... almost all of my working life is vague and secretive at the moment.

The film of A4 2 A3 is progressing well and I met with the producer, lead actor and director this week.

My play 'Drip' will be opening at the Carlton Courthouse on September 24 as part of Melborn '08 and the Fringe Festival. Drip is currently in the number 1 spot in the 'top 40' unproduced works over at Script Squirrel.

Most of my writing time has recently been given over to the writing of comic books. I currently have five different projects in the works, with the first to be published in January.
I also had a good chat about the future with DFC editor Will Fickling earlier this week. The DFC, based in Oxford, England, is a weekly comic book brought out by Random House. It would be fantastic to see something like this supported by a mainstream Australian publisher.
I've recently realised that writing comics is my dream job... it looks like that dream is coming true.

The upshot of all of this is I am on the brink of being a full-time writer. I'd like to give a huge thank-you to Megan and Finn for all of their support.

Thanks also to my editors and sounding boards, Megan and Kym, both of whom have had to listen to and comment on bizzare things for years while treading that fine line between criticism, support and just humoring me.

Lastly, I'd like to thank caffeine for all of its help with my writing between 12 and 4 in the morning.

White Dove III and 96000 Metres

There are several exciting Comic Book projects in the works at the moment; a number of which I can't talk about yet, but I will when I can.

I have two stories in an upcoming anthology; White Dove III illustrated by Colin Wilson (Judge Dredd, Star Wars, Point Blank) and 96000 Metres illustrated by Tom Bonin (Dicks). The anthology is due for publication in January - officially solicited in October. There are some other great well known creators involved. More when it's official.

A4 2 A3 - The Film.

Last year Simon Barlow and myself wrote a musical called A4 2 A3 - a love story set in a photocopy store.

After it won the 'People's Choice' Award at the inaugural Short, Sweet and Song festival, the film rights were optioned.

All of this disappeared for a while but I'm happy to announce that it's back on. A new producer, a great lead in Joe Main and a fantastic director in Ben Shackleford; shooting is set to begin in December.

On Friday, Spicks and Specks producer Anthony Watt got in contact with me to say that 'The Comedy Hour' on ABC radio wanted to use a sketch I wrote titled '90% Percent of Victorian Patients Don't Go Home With Scissors Inside Them'... I know, it's a catchy title.

I've just come home from the taping where the sketch was really well received by the live audience and I learned that I was the first 'guest writer' the show has had... which is nice. The show airs every Monday night at 9 with my sketch probably being broadcast tonight or next week.

Meanwhile, my play 'The Example' has been selected for a 'World's Best 10-Minute-Plays' season at the Edinburgh Festival. The season is being produced by Bite Size Theatre.

My play 'Drip' has come through the Top 30 readings of Melborn 08 to make the cut for the Top Ten. This means it will be part of a three week season at the Carlton Courthouse from September 24th through to October 11th. It will also be published. The season is run by Melbourne Writers Theatre.

On the strength of it's 'Judges Choice Award' at Crash Test Drama, 'Believe' has been selected for the upcoming Spring Carnival at Dante's in October/November.

Meanwhile 'The Example' has been reviewed again as part of the new Shorter and Sweeter season at Sydney's Newtown Theatre.

The Example, by Tom Taylor and directed by Felicity Burke, touches on the war on terror, notions of trust and suspicion and the bases for them, bigotry, credulity, offbeat romance, superstition, alienation and more. All this, from an abandoned bag on a suburban railway platform.

A playwright writing comics?

As well as writing for TV, film and (the usual) theatre, over the last year or so I've been quietly working away on several comic projects.
This all came about after meeting master illustrator Colin Wilson. Colin is currently the illustrator of Star Wars 'Rebellion' for Dark Horse comics as well as illustrating the online comic of Bionic Commando written by Andy Diggle, which you can read here.

Colin and I have a few things in the pipeline (and hopefully I can talk about some of that soon) but I thought I'd put an image from one of our 'in progress' projects.

As well as the work with Colin, I have a number of things in the pipeline with Tom Bonin, including being luck enough to write an issue of his detective comic 'Dicks'. I will hopefully be able to post some of his awesome work soon.

I was fortunate enough to get along to the Frankston Arts Centre tonight to see my play The Example in Shorter and Sweeter. A really nice production with two great actors in Alan Flower and Sophie Cook. The Arts Centre itself was a bit of a surprise; the theatre was quite modern and seated 800. There was a very good house on the night too.

'The Example' is currently part of a twelve venue tour of Australia with seven other short plays in Shorter and Sweeter. These plays are supposed to be the 'best of the best' of Short and Sweet, not bad considering their have been over 5000 plays submitted to the festival.

Well, the pilot has been filmed and, as well as being the writer, I was asked to be the co-presenter of the show... which I said 'no' to... but they made me do it anyway.

I will have more news as I'm allowed speak about it but at the moment it's just 'fingers crossed'.

There was a really nice piece about Short and Sweet this morning on RRR FM radio, which focused largely on my new play 'Protest'. The interviewer had (unusually) read the play and described it as "A great script. A great commentary of civil disobedience… the language, the observation, the writing is so evocative…” I think this is the first time I've had anything described as evocative.

Also, it looks like I've sold an article to a magazine. Woo Hoo!

My new short play 'Protest' has been selected for the top 30 for Short and Sweet at the Melbourne Arts Centre. It was chosen from an international entry of 1148 plays.

And last week I won the Peoples' Choice and Judges Choice awards at the October Crash Test Drama for another new play 'A Short Play for a Competition' which means it will be produced later in the year.

Windows Vista - Doesn't Tolerate Minority Groups.

Almost everyone has heard about problems with Windows Vista not allowing programs to run and rendering some peripherals completely useless. However, the new built-in security has a far more sinister side.

News is coming in of Windows Vista not allowing some [i]people[/i] to use the computer. Apparently, part of Vista's advanced security system stops access to Windows based solely on a person's religious beliefs, ethnicity or sexual preference.

Obviously some of this is wrapped up in the continuing fight against terror, with various ethnic groups unable to use the program for safety reasons. But Microsoft has also clearly been reached by the religious right, with Vista now designed to give a small electric shock to any homosexual user.

According to a Microsoft spokesman; "A computer is a weapon. We want to make sure that the enemy can't use it against us. This is also why your peripherals don't work. All of those games, computer screens and mp3 players that don't work with Vista are clearly evil."

George Bush to Pull Troops Out of Iraq and Find Peaceful Solution... April Fool

Leader of the free world, George Bush, has announced today that he intends to pull American and allied troops out of Iraq and look for a peaceful solution to the conflict.

However, as several nations rejoiced, Bush followed up his shock announcement with "April Fool!" and then giggled like a schoolgirl.

Bush sees this incredibly witty bit of deception as right up there with his 'Mission Accomplished' pun and his equally humorous 'We know the enemy has Weapons of Mass Destruction'.

While the press, the nation and the world looked on in horror Bush said, "What? Come on, that's hilarious. I am the hilariouser."

Bush insists that it's his sense of humour that makes him such a good leader.

"Without my sense of humour, I could be really unpopular."

A lot of people will die today in Iraq - not an April Fool.

David Hicks Escapes Guantanamo, Finally Heading Home to be Imprisoned

David Hicks, the Australian man held at Guantanamo Bay for five years without charge, where he was allegedly subjected to torture, is finally being released.

Hicks will return to his own country where, finally, the government that wouldn't fight for his rights for fear of upsetting America, can imprison him themselves.

Despite the fact that David Hicks has pleaded guilty to a crime that was invented after he was imprisoned, both the US and Australian governments are, stupidly, calling it a victory in the war on terror.

According to Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, "This is a great day for Australia. England had all of their citizens released years ago, after which it was found that they were all innocent of their charges. But fortunately, America has managed to create a crime to charge our citizen with. This means that he can come home and stare at Australian Prison Bars." He then added, "I love George Bush, I would have his babies."

Of course the government is probably hoping that Australian citizens will now forget about the whole thing and not look at the Guantanamo Bays of their own on various islands around Australia. On these islands many David Hicks' are held without charge, their crime; fleeing war and persecution and trying to enter Australia.

When asked about this, Howard replied "Free Candy for everyone who votes for me." He then handed the reporter a balloon.

Bush Asks for Patience, "Waiting will win the war in Iraq."

American President George W. Bush now insists that 'patience' is the key to success in Iraq.

According to Bush, "If America waits long enough, then the enemy might get bored, and boredom will lead to victory!"

Of course the current war, forgetting the other Iraq wars in recent times, is now entering it's fifth year. It has claimed 3,200 American soldiers and, as far as the people America are there to protect, estimates differ wildly between 60,000 and 600,000 Iraqi Civilian lives.

This has prompted some people to ask just how long 'patience' will be the strategy.

Bush was uncharacteristically quick to answer this.

"The 'patience' strategy will be in effect until the new president comes in. Then it's someone else's problem. Be patient... I'll be gone soon."

Iraqi civilians are patiently dying.
